Some of the aftermath of the Carr Fire which devastated the town of Redding and many parts of Shasta country in California, in July 2018.
Hellfire
In July 2018, the town of Redding in the Shasta district of California experienced an unprecedented tornado of fire- an intense vortex the size of six football fields known as the Carr Fire. During its brief existence the incendiary cyclone sent jets of flame hundreds of metres into the sky and obliterated everything in its path destroying at least 1,604 structures. Six people were killed, but many made narrow escapes.
Although there is nothing new about wildfires, there is now no doubt that climate change is making these events much more extreme and more frequent. With California and other parts of the world continuing to experience overwhelming fires year after year they have become the ‘new normal’.
These images, taken five weeks after the event, show some of those whose homes were obliterated in this terrifying fire.
