Exerpt from Deluge Five Channel Video Installation: 1 Minute 30 seconds
Full version: 13 Minutes, 27 Seconds.
Deluge
This multi channel installation is the culmination of the video component of Drowning World, incorporating all of its visual elements and exploring the tension between the frozen photographic moment and the perpetual movement and uncertainty of dystopian, post-flood environments. Alongside shooting stills I have shot a vast archive of video footage in eleven countries, which is fully activated in this dedicated edit.
Across five screens viewers witness vast flooded landscapes and the lives of a few people as they journey though inundated communities towards their flooded homes. The experience is both intimate and deeply political placing individual experiences within a global narrative of climate disaster. In addition a carefully designed immersive sound landscape fills the room. Composed mostly of ambient sound it adds coherence and also a disturbing element helping to position this work on the fine line between documentary and art.
Deluge was produced with support from Kyotographie 2018, MOCA Jacksonville, FotoFest Houston and the University of Michigan, Institute for the Humanities Gallery. Video Editors: Lara Garcia and Juan Soto. Sound Design: Seb Bruen and Tim Harrison. Music composed by Jon Quinn and Oli Steadman.
