The Stone, The Gun and The Plate (with Marcelo Brodsky)
These works originate from my black and white photographs taken in 1985 and 1986 when I documenting the mobilisation, repression and tragedy of the final years of apartheid. As part of a recent collaborative engagement Argentinian artist Marcelo Brodsky has made an intervention, adding colour and words to the photographic prints.
With the intent of revisiting and bringing new energy to these moments—we set about creating four triptychs, each one focused on a particular physical object that appears repeatedly in my archive, reflecting the intense conflict of these years. We chose these objects: the stone; teargas; the wooden gun; and the sjambok (a flexible rubber whip).
The triptychs are named:
The Stone, the Gun and the Plate
Teargas, the Ball and the Panga
The Wooden Gun, Rugby Posts and the Flag
The Sjambok, Table Mountain and the Liquor Store
